From Asthma to Awesomeness

As an 11 year old, Parupalli Kashyap first enrolled with a training camp in Hyderabad, but when he moved to Banglore, he joined Padukone Academy. In 2004, Kashyap was diagnosed with asthma after a few medical tests. The diagnosis came as a shock to him and he thought his playing career was finished, he put in a lot of effort with determination to overcome the problem , After the improvement in his condition he continued his training at the Gopichand Academy.

His first title was in 2005 when he represented Andhra Pradesh and won the boys singles title at the National Junior Open Badminton Championship. From 2006 he started to appear at international tournaments. In 2006 his rankings improved from outside 100 to 64 as he defeated the then world number 19, Wacha, to reach pre-quater finals in Hong Kong Open, and then in Bitburger Open, he made it to the semis.

In the same year Kashyap was chosen to represent India at 2006 Asian games. In 2009 he was a semi finalist at the Dutch Open and runners up at Thailand International, Spanish Open. In 2009 he was Singapore Super Series semifinalist. Then there came 2010 Commonwealth Games he won the bronze medal for India. He also reached the semis at Indian Open Grand Prix 2010.

At 2012 Summer Olympics, Kashyap lost to top seed Lee Chong Wei in the quarterfinals, in the process, he created history by becoming the only Indian to reach this stage in the Olympics. This achievement led him to 19th rank. His careers best ranking was number 6 in 2013. And now he brought the curtains down on India's campaign in the 20th CWG to a thunderous applause by winning a historic gold in men's singles badminton on Sunday. He stole the limelight by becoming the first shuttler in 32 years to win a gold in CWG. He joined badminton legends Prakash Padukone and late Syed Modi who won the title in 1978 and1982. He rose to the occasion and played a sensational game of nerves 21-14,11-21,21-19 triumph over Derek Wong of Singapore in finals.

He displayed some nervy moments but he stuck it out to win two points and clinch gold.
